Before I question/comment, I must admit that I only read the first post. I don't have much time, but I'll read the rest of the topic later. Anyway... Here we go. Nobody should have religion forced on them. Your parents were wrong to shove Jesus down your throat, and now they reap what they sow. If they are good parents, they will realize that they can't force you to live their life. They will realize that having good relations with their offspring (the same offspring that can eventually decide when to declare them incompetent and put them in a home) requires respect. You can't force anything on someone you repsect. I can understand their desire to raise you with religion or spirituality. I will do the same with my children when the time comes. But you're an adult now, and they are no longer responsible for your spirituality. You're here to make your own choices. If they can't or wont understand that, then perhaps you do need to move out. If you're capable of making their house payment, you can afford to get an apartment with some room mates (it's actually kind of fun unless your room mates are dicks). My mother was kind of the same way. Not so much into the whole "go to church or I send you back to God myself", but more into the tradtion thing. When I informed her that I would be "shacking up" with my girlfriend, she about died. She made threats ranging from everything between "I'm taking you off our car insurance" to "I'm taking you out of the will". She got over it though. She came to realize that trying to make my life miserable wasn't the way to get her innocent baby boy back and that having a good relationship with your children is more important than anything. Now she loves my girlfriend and doesn't think twice about the fact that we're "living in sin". |

I was never shown religion as a kid. Something I learned recently was that my grandmother on my father's side is apparently a Jehova's witness, and because of her overbearing need to pass her beliefs onto others, my Dad eventually stopped listening to her and religion as a whole (and it was even the main reason he originally moved out, I'm told). My mother was never one to pay attention to things like that, either. Probably more interested in getting more drugs... Anyway, because of that, the only religious compass I had in my life was my grandfather... and if he had lived longer, he would probably be the only one I know that's ever been overtly religious (despite what I said about grams, I never knew she was a JW until less than a month ago because of her lack of passion these days). Probably because of this that I never had a need for it. That said, there's absolutely no problem with anyone practicing whatever religion they so choose... save for the cults and Scientology, which is really only a glorified science fiction story bought into by zealous actors and fools that think doing so will garner them anything other than negative attention and the collective snicker of everyone not so foolish to fall for such crap... what was I talking about? So, yeah, do what you want. As long as the beliefs you have are enforcing positive action and involvement in your community and on others, there should be nothing wrong. The problem comes when people take the idea of what is positive and what isn't into their own hands. That's what the law and government is for. And that's why public opinion is supposed to influence the government. Selfish bastards. Go vote, ya bastards! |
